Braille and Large-Print Labels.
Labels for Literacy will send a free monthly package of self-stick Braille labels for common brands of grocery and supermarket products to any blind person in the United States. The project is designed to provide greater access to information through Braille and to increase literacy among blind and visually impaired people. The technology was developed by the Miami-based company TechnoTree International. It creates Braille through the use of a clear epoxy that is placed atop any surface to create durable literature. It is cheap, prints fast, and claims to revolutionize the field of assistive technology for blind people by introducing equal access to consumer product information. Corporations and brand-name companies sponsor Labels for Literacy by producing sheets of labels with Braille text on them. Labels for Literacy distributes the sheets in packages to blind people, who can place the labels on the products in the supermarket or back in their home.
