2.  Have a place - Home of a family member or friend, motel or shelter.

Did you know...?

When possible, evacuating within your city or county reduces your chance of being stranded in traffic and shortens your time to return home. Before a storm threatens, contact your local emergency management office for evacuation information.

3.  Notify family or friends of your plans - When you are leaving, where you are going and how to reach you.

4.  Fill your car with gas.

5.  Bring extra cash - Power outages may cause banks and ATM's to be closed.

6.  Enact your pet plan

Public shelters do not allow pets.  If you evacuate to a shelter make arrangements for your pets.

Making your home more disaster resistant can prevent the need to evacuate and can reduce damages.

Flood damage is NOT covered by standard homeowners insurance.  Check your policy now!  For information go to: www.fema.gov/nfip or call 1-888-CALL-FLOOD ext. 445

9.  Bring toys, books and games for entertainment.

10.  Bring pillows and blankets - also bring rain gear and sturdy shoes.

11.  Map out your route - Be familiar with your area's evacuation routes - VDOT Hurricane Evacuation maps www.vdot.state.va.us/traf/hurricane.html .

12.  Arrive safely at your destination

People who require special assistance in evacuating should contact their local emergency management office for assistance in developing an evacuation plan.
